Biography

Guillaume Rossignol was born in Paris in 1971. He started to paint at the age of 17, when he was struck by the expressive power of a self-portrait by Van Gogh. He attended night school at the Ville du Paris, where he studied drawing with the painter Remi Aron. It was in this period that he began painting landscapes, inspired by the countryside around the French capital.

His work, which was at first heavily influenced by Impressionism, was later influenced by the works of Matisse, Picasso, and the avant-garde of the twentieth century. The frescoes of Masaccio, seen during a trip to Florence, were a revelation to him. He attended the Academy of Fine Art in Florence for two years, in order to study in depth the works of the early Italian Renaissance. In Tuscany he also learnt about the world of restoration, which helped him to better understand the possibilities, as well as the limits, of different painting techniques.

On his return to France, he did his military service as a conscientious objector in the Emmaus community, founded by Abbé Pierre. He spent a year in Budapest, where he studied artistic anatomy with Kiss Tibor at the Academy of Fine Arts. Afterwards, he attended the courses on morphology by Jean-François Debord at the School of Fine Arts, in Paris. In France, he began a series of paintings that he has worked on for more than twenty years.

In 2005, he moved to Sabina, Italy, where he now lives with his family. His works are in collections in Europe and the United States.

    Frequenta i Cours du soir presso la Ville de Paris, dove studia disegno con il pittore Remi Aron. È in questo periodo che inizia a dipingere paesaggi, ispirato dalla campagna circostante la capitale francese. Il suo lavoro, inizialmente segnato nel profondo dall’Impressionismo, viene in seguito influenzato dalle opere di Matisse, Picasso e dalle avanguardie del Novecento.

    Durante un viaggio a Firenze, gli affreschi di Masaccio rappresentano per lui una nuova rivelazione. Si iscrive all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, dove studierà per due anni, per approfondire le opere del primo Rinascimento italiano. In Toscana frequenta anche il mondo del restauro, che gli permette di comprendere meglio le possibilità e i limiti delle diverse tecniche pittoriche.

    Di ritorno in Francia svolge il suo servizio militare come obiettore di coscienza nelle comunità Emmaus fondate dall’Abbé Pierre.

    Trascorre un anno a Budapest, dove studia l’Anatomia artistica con il maestro Kiss Tibor presso l’Accademia di belle Arti. Successivamente frequenta i corsi di morfologia di Jean-François Debord all’École des beaux-arts di Parigi.

    In Francia inizia una serie di quadri a cui lavorerà per oltre vent’anni.

    Nel 2005 si trasferisce in Sabina, dove attualmente vive con la sua famiglia.

    I suoi lavori sono presenti in Europa e negli Stati Uniti.

  • Guillaume Rossignol est né a Paris en 1971. Il commence à peindre à l’âge de 17 ans après avoir été touché par la puissance expressive d’un autoportrait de Van Gogh et frequente alors les cours du soir de la ville de Paris où il étudie le dessin avec le peintre Remi Aron. C’est durant cette période qu’il entreprend de peindre des paysages en s’inspirant de la campagne autour de Paris. Son travail, initialement marqué par l’ impressionnisme, sera ensuite influencé par le travail de Matisse, Picasso et les avant-gardes du 20eme siècle.

    Durant un voyage à Florence, les fresques de Masaccio sont pour lui une nouvelle révélation. Il s’inscrit alors à l’école des beaux arts de Florence où il analyse pendant deux ans plus particulièrement les oeuvres du début de la renaissance Italienne. Il fréquente également le monde de la restauration qui lui permet de mieux apprécier les possibilités et les limites des différentes techniques picturales.

    De retour en France, il effectue son service militaire comme objecteur de conscience dans des communautés Emmaùs fondées par l’abbe Pierre.

    Il passe un an en Hongrie où il travaille l’anatomie artistique avec Kiss Tibor à l’école des beaux arts de Budapest. Il assiste par la suite aux cours de morphologie de Jean-Francois Debord à l école des beaux arts de Paris et commence en France une serie de tableaux sur lesquels il travaillera pendant plus de vingt ans.

    En 2005 il s’installe dans la campagne de la Sabine au nord de Rome où il vit actuellement avec sa famille.

    Ses oeuvres sont présentes en Europe et aux Etats Unis.
