The Dark Side of Goldberg Variations

The concert

The Dark Side of The Goldberg Variations is a performance that grew from the collaboration with the music group “Musica Antiqua Latina” and its director, Giordano Antonelli.

The aim of this shared research was to find formal and conceptual correspondences between the work of J.S. Bach and ‘Variations’, a painting by Guillaume Rossignol.

This painting represents 5 faces, and addresses the issue of the existence of a possible stable inner centre which remains in the midst of contrasting moods and emotions. In each of the four corners of the work, a face is depicted in a state of emotional difficulty, while in the centre of the work there is a smiling face.

The image of the painting, or some of its details, is projected onto the screen or wall during the concert, in a dark and immersive atmosphere. During the first aria the whole picture is projected. Each variation is then combined with the image of a detail of the painting. During the final aria, which echoes the start of the concert, the visual journey ends with a very slow, almost imperceptible zoom-in that starts from the whole picture and ends with the smile of the central figure.

The Dark Side of Goldberg Variations è una performance nata dalla collaborazione con il gruppo “Musica Antiqua Latina” e con il suo direttore, Giordano Antonelli.
L’intento di questa ricerca condivisa è stato di trovare delle corrispondenze formali e concettuali tra il capolavoro di J.S. Bach e Variazioni, un dipinto di Guillaume Rossignol. Tale dipinto rappresenta 5 visi e affronta il tema dell’esistenza di un possibile centro interiore stabile, che permane in mezzo ad umori ed emozioni contrastanti. In ognuno degli quattro angoli dell’opera è raffigurato un viso che attraversa uno stato di difficoltà, mentre nel centro vi è un viso che sorride. Durante il concerto, in un’atmosfera scura e immersiva, l’immagine del quadro, o di alcuni suoi dettagli, è proiettata su schermo o parete. Nel corso della prima aria viene proiettato il quadro intero. Ad ogni variazione è poi abbinata l’immagine di un dettaglio del quadro. Durante l’aria finale, che riprende l’incipit del concerto, si conclude il viaggio visivo con un lentissimo, quasi impercettibile, zoom-in che, a partire dal quadro intero, termina sul sorriso della figura centrale.

L’objet de cette recherche a été de trouver des correspondances formelles et conceptuelles entre le chef d’oeuvre de J.S.Bach et “Variations”, une peinture de Guillaume Rossignol.
Ce tableau représente 5 visages et explore le thème de l’existence d’un possible centre intérieur stable demeurant parmi des humeurs et émotions contrastées. Dans chacun des angles de l’œuvre est représenté un visage qui traverse un état de difficulté, alors qu’au centre un visage sourit.
Durant le concert, dans une atmosphère obscure et immersive, l’image du tableau ou de certains de ses détails est projeté sur un écran ou un mur. Durant le premier “aria“ le tableau est projeté en entier. Ensuite à chacune des variations correspond un détail du tableau.
Durant l’aria finale, qui reprend l incipit du concert, le voyage visuel se conclut par un très lent zoom-in qui part du tableau en entier et se finit sur le sourire de la figure centrale.
